Surviving stormy weather with aircrew, water survival training
LOWESTOFT COLLEGE, England -- Karen Abeyasekere, 100th Air Refueling Wing Public Affairs, pulls herself up on the cargo net at the end of the water survival portion of survival, evasion, resistance and escape training July 14, 2011. The half-Olympic size pool is 16-feet deep, with pumps which create six- to eight-foot waves, fans which produce a 30-knot wind, and sprinkler system and lighting control to replicate horrific sea condtions. Abeyasekere, along with 12 U.S. Air Force members from RAFs Mildenhall and Lakenheath, underwent the training which included pulling yourself along underneath a parchute which lays on the water, and climbing into a life raft in severe storm conditions and in complete darkness.
