Confined space facility provides additional training options for firefighters

RAF MILDENHALL, England -- Firefighter Jerry Myles, left, and Crew Manager Dave Bootman, both 100th Civil Engineer Squadron Fire Department, check to see if they could take a "victim" back the way they came in. It was decided that the safest way to get the victim out was to use safety ropes lowered down by firefighters at the top of the facility, using a tripod and mechanical hauling system March 8, 2011, during a training exercise in the newly-built facility. The confined space trainer provides firefighters multiple ways of reaching a victim, allowing use of different equipment, depending on the scenario. Once inside, obstacles can be placed to simulate potential hazards, which make it more difficult for the rescuers to manouever a victim if a backboard, litter or basket has to be used.
