Confined space facility provides additional training options for firefighters
RAF MILDENHALL, England -- Tech. Sgt. Jake Silvia, 100th Civil Engineer Squadron Fire Department, gives a safety briefing to firefighters preparing to enter the confined space trainer here March 8, 2011, as part of a training exercise. The new trainer gives firefighters the ability to practice moving vertically if the main steps are out of use. It also enables firefighters to create new ways of reaching victimes and lowering them from the top of a platform to rescuers and medics on the ground. For this exercise, two firefighters used a ladder to go down inside the confined space, but pulled the victim out of the hole and to safety by using a mechanical haul system on a tripod, which was put together by other firefighters above ground.
