NDI: under the surface

RAF MILDENHALL, England – Airman Josh Ouchie, 100th Maintenance Group Non-Destructive Inspection technician, holds up a bottle of aircraft engine oil prior to running it through Spectral M machine at the NDI shop March 9. The machine measures all “wear” metal inside the oil sample breaking it down to parts per millionth to help determine if aircraft engines are within acceptable operating limits. If metal particles exceed the allowable limits, further troubleshooting is involved to locate the failing part or parts preventing possible damage to or loss of aircraft.
