Karen A. picks up the gauntlet
Flora, a Peregrine/Lanner-cross falcon, swoops back to the hand of owner Alan Merenghi, driving his bird control van down the length of the flightline, after scaring away flocks of birds. Flora sits on Alan's hand in the van, before flying swiftly out of the window to disperse birds. Once he blows a whistle, she immediately returns to his hand, knowing he will have a piece of food for her to come back to. The bird control specialists regularly patrol RAF Mildenhall and its flightline, ready at a moment's notice to disperse flocks of birds who pose a danger to aircraft. These actions help prevent birdstrikes and damage to aircraft. (U.S. Air Force photo by Karen Abeyasekere)
