BRITS BITS: Exploring Ely
A sign tells the story of the draining of the Fens Feb. 26, 2014, in Ely, England. When the Fens were drained in the 17th century, the land of East Anglia took on a very different look from the lowland marshes which dominated the landscape. Landowners wished to make the land more productive and the Earl of Bedford and the Dutch engineer Sir Cornelius Vermuyden began work to drain the Fens. (U.S. Air Force photo by Gina Randall/Released)
