Thanksgiving service at Ely Cathedral
U.S. service members, their families and other employees of RAF Mildenhall and RAF Lakenheath attend a service on the eve of Thanksgiving Nov. 27, 2013, at Ely Cathedral. The 27th annual Thanksgiving service gave U.S. service members in England an opportunity to enjoy a holiday service at one of the cathedrals in the local area. Ely has been a place of worship since approximately 673 A.D., when Etheldreda, daughter of an East Anglian king, founded a nunnery there. In 1109, Ely became a cathedral and survived minimal destruction during the Reformation period when many abbeys and other places of Catholic worship were destroyed.
