Fire department teaches children not to fear firefighters

U.S. Air Force Airman 1st Class Jacob Dietmeyer, left, 100th Civil Engineer Squadron Fire Department firefighter from Gurnee, Ill.; “Sparky,” 100th CES Fire Department mascot; and U.S. Air Force Airman 1st Class Kevin Brittan, 100th CES Fire Department firefighter from Lindenhurst, N.Y., pose for a photograph following a book-reading session Aug. 21, 2013, at the library on RAF Mildenhall, England. The firefighters taught the children firefighters are to be trusted and not feared. The firefighters hoped that by children seeing them as real people, in the event of an emergency children would not panic and would follow firefighters’ instructions to safety.
