Nip, tuck tanker-style: Thereby hangs a tail
The underside of a KC-135 Stratotanker tail lays horizontal before the final bolts are unfastened to allow its removal Sept. 11, 2015, on RAF Mildenhall, England. The jet was undergoing a full isochronal inspection, which included a “fin fold” and removal of the tail in order to repair a cracked rudder. Once full maintenance is complete, the aircraft will be repainted and become part of RAF Mildenhall’s fleet of refuelers. (U.S. Air Force photo by Karen Abeyasekere/Released)
