447th Bomb Group family, friends visit Thorpe Abbotts as part of 'Return to Rattlesden' event

Priscilla Goldfarb, left, and Dana Flemming show photos of veterans from the 447th Bomb Group (Rattlesden) during a "Return to Rattlesden" event at the Suffolk airfield June 11, 2022. Flemming's father, 1st Lt. Dean Flemming, was a B-17 Flying Fortress pilot in the 709th Bomb Squadron, 447th BG. After a visit to Kent, England, several years ago, Goldfarb discovered a US flag and plaque marking the site of a B-17 plane crash in April 1944; she conducted much research on the pilot -- Lt. William "Bill" Johnson, 711th Bomb Squadron, 447th BG -- who died after intentionally crashing his battle-damaged plane to avoid killing people in the nearby village.
