U.S. Air Force Airmen from RAF Mildenhall show a few of the almost-5,000 artefacts which have been discovered during a six-week archaeological recovery on private farmland in Essex, England, Sept. 23, 2025. The area is a crash site of a World War II U.S. Army Air Forces P-47 Thunderbolt, which went down Jan. 26, 1944, during a training flight from RAF Bodney, Norfolk. The aim of the recovery, led by Cotswold Archaeology in partnership with the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency, was to locate evidence from the aircraft and, if possible, recover remains related to its young pilot – 2nd Lt.
