Canadian Army and Royal Canadian Air Force retired-Capt. Jocelyne Letain cleans aircraft parts found at a crash site in Essex, England, Sept. 23, 2025. In January 1944, U.S. Army Air Forces 2nd. Lt. Lester Lowry was flying a P-47 Thunderbolt out of RAF Bodney, Norfolk, on a training flight over Essex, when he was involved in an accident as the aircraft dove vertically at speed and crashed into a field. Lowry was the only person on the plane and according to local residents at the time, did not have the opportunity to bail out. (U.S. Air Force photo by Karen Abeyasekere)
