7/13/2012 - RAF MILDENHALL, England -- Recently, I had to create a power of attorney for my family care plan. I thought that it was going to be a really long drawn-out process and I wasn't looking forward to it.
In order to accomplish the POA, I thought I would have to make multiple appointments, and it was going to be time consuming.
What I had imagined couldn't have been further from the truth. I went online to the Air Force legal assistance website and clicked on the legal worksheets. To my shock, there was a section dedicated to POAs. I clicked on it and it brought to me the relevant documents.
I was able to choose between general, financial related, personal property, real estate and housing, automobile or miscellaneous. Each section and subsection had a brief description what the document could be used for.
I selected the option I needed and it took no more than five minutes to fill in the information. After hitting the 'Submit' button, the website generated a reference number that I needed to take to my base's legal office.
I took the reference number to the legal office and an Airman was able to pull up the POA I completed online. He asked me to review the information to make sure everything was correct. Once I looked over the information, the Airman printed it off, told me where I needed to sign. Then the he signed and stamped my POA and gave it to me.
Just like that I was done. The whole process from start to finish took less than a half hour to complete.
The website also offers basic information about legal assistance topics that affect Airmen and their families. Additionally, Airmen can use the other legal worksheets to make their wills and advance medical directives.
After using the services online and visiting the local legal office, Airmen can provide feedback about their experience electronically through the website.
In the future, if I have to create other legal documents, I know I can visit the legal assistance website.
