In honor of Security Awareness Month, the 100th Air Refueling Wing Information Protection office offers the following five tips to Team Mildenhall members:

· Ensure classified media is secured
o Removable hard drives containing classified information must be locked in a Government Services Agency-approved safe when computers are left unattended.

· Continuous security clearance evaluation is important
o Initially, a security clearance background check is completed to determine trustworthiness, loyalty and reliability for access to classified and sensitive information.
o Throughout your career, commanders, supervisors and co-workers will continually monitor your behavior to ensure you remain trustworthy, loyal and reliable.
o To preserve your security clearance, avoid behavior such as misuse of alcohol, illegal drugs, government charge card abuse and financial irresponsibility.

· Single agency checks
o If marriage or cohabitation occurs after a member completes a single scope background investigation (Top Secret), a single agency check is required. Team Mildenhall members must report status changes to their security manager.

· Obtaining shredders authorized for classified destruction
o Only purchase a shredder from the National Security Agency-approved equipment product list at http://www.nsa.gov/ia/government/mdg.cfm.

· Dispose of sensitive information properly
o When disposing of sensitive or classified information, use only approved destruction methods such as burning, cross-cut shredding, wet pulping, and chemical decomposition. Methods for clearing, sanitizing or destroying classified information technology equipment and media include overwriting, degaussing and physical destruction of components or media.
