Earth Week - turning off computers, monitors makes for energy savings at work

RAF MILDENHALL, England -- This week is Earth Week, and conserving energy is one way everyone can help protect the environment. Below is a list of ways to help in that endeavor at your workplace.

Half of the equipment energy use in offices stems from computers and monitors.

If the PC has to remain on, but the machine is not in use - switch off the monitor, which can account for two thirds of a computer's energy consumption.

Check to make sure that energy saving settings are compatible with your organisations' computer network.

Laptops and flat screen monitors use less energy than a conventional PC and monitor.

Liquid Crystal Displays (LCD's), including the new TFT screens, produce less heat, use less energy.

Screen savers are not a low-power mode, and some screen savers can actually use more energy than operating in normal working conditions.
