Airmen from all squadrons across RAF Mildenhall, England, will battle for the 2016 Marauder Melee Cup. The sports day, scheduled for June 16, 2016, encourages competitiveness and squadron spirit and will take place at various locations across the base.

“Marauder Melee, hosted by the 100th Force Support Squadron, is an annual base-wide event to encourage morale and readiness through physical team-building activities in a family friendly environment,” said Samantha Pabalan, 100th FSS activities program director.

The origin of the name describes the spirit of the event.

“This is the fifth annual Marauder Melee Team Mildenhall Sports and Family Fun Day,” said Pamela Moxley, 100th Mission Support Group deputy director. “The Marauder, the cartoon pirate character, has been the Team Mildenhall mascot for many years.  Use of this mascot strengthens our heritage and enhances team cohesiveness.”

Melee, a confused hand-to-hand fight or struggle among several people, describes the friendly competition between squadrons, continued Moxley.

Team or single sports events will begin after a Team Mildenhall 5k. Participants can take part in various sports, including volleyball, soccer, tennis, and dodge ball, that will be held at locations centered around the Hardstand Fitness Center. The top three squadrons with the most accumulated points will be announced at the barbeque at Washington Square. Friends and family are encouraged to stick around for a concert including country music stars Lucas Hoge, Toree McGee and Guy Jaquier.

“The objectives and goal of Marauder Melee are to increase public awareness, maintain a legacy of heritage that ties our history back to esprit de corps through sports, build strong partnerships between military and civilian personnel, and increase participation in base community events,” said Pabalan.

Last year’s winners from the 100th Air Refueling Wing staff agencies aim to take the cup once again.

“I hope everyone will have an enjoyable time as well as build teamwork and camaraderie,” said Col. John Howard, 100th Air Refueling Wing vice commander.  “As Gen. Douglas MacArthur said, ‘On the fields of friendly strife are sown the seeds that on other days and other fields will bear the fruits of victory.’”

Volunteers are still needed for setup and tear down for both the concert and events. To volunteer call the Bob Hope Community Center at DSN 238-2579.
