10/3/2013 - RAF MILDENHALL, England -- The post office has a new, updated checkout system, making shipping and receiving packages easier.

The Point of Sale One program was given to all overseas post offices by the U.S. Postal Service. The POS- 1 program has live updates, a vast improvement from the old program.

"The old program ran on floppy disks and was extremely outdated," said Staff Sgt. Jeremy Fritz, 100th Civil Engineer Squadron custodian of postal effects.

The live-update feed is synched with USPS. Whenever POS-1 is updated in the U.S., the information is automatically updated overseas too.

"RAF Mildenhall was the first large base in the U.K. to receive the update," said Master Sgt. Gregory Sartain, U.S. Air Forces in Europe A-6 command postal operations manager.

Point of Sale One operates with a touch screen and enables postal workers to more easily process packages, sell postage and print off tracking numbers for packages on a receipt.

"Because the program is touch screen, it also has the entire user manual uploaded to the system, so it makes troubleshooting much easier," Fritz said.

Point of Sale One saves time for the customers as well as the postal clerks.

When the floppy disks used by the old program used to "crash," custodians of postal effects would have to rebuild the disk, which could take between 20 to 30 minutes before the disk was able to go back online, Fritz said. When that happened, one of the clerks would be taken off line, which caused longer lines at the check-out desk.

"The program is highly important, especially with holiday season coming up," Fritz said. "It's more secure and it allows people more ease when mailing things -- not just to family members and friends back in the states, but also to our deployed members, wherever they may be."
